Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, scattered across two harbours and 48 dormant volcanic cones, and the launchpad for most trips around the country. Beyond the Sky Tower and waterfront, the wineries of Waiheke Island and the black-sand beaches of the west coast are highlights.

Don't miss
Take the early morning ferry to Rangitoto Island and hike to the summit before the day-trippers arrive. The 25-minute crossing costs around NZ$36 return; the volcanic crater view at the top is worth every step through the lava fields.
Spend a full day on Waiheke Island hitting the vineyards — Mudbrick and Tantalus are the showpieces, but Te Motu is the insider pick. Buy the island's all-day bus pass for NZ$10 to hop between wineries without worrying about a designated driver.
Attend the daily Maori cultural performance at the Auckland War Memorial Museum at 11am or 1:30pm — it is included in the general admission and gives genuine context to the Haka beyond what most visitors ever encounter.
Pack a picnic and head to Cornwall Park on a Sunday morning. Locals spread out on the lawns of this volcanic cone reserve — grab supplies from the nearby Newmarket market and find a spot well away from the Stardome side where families cluster.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Sky Tower & Viaduct Harbour
Start at the Sky Tower for panoramic views over both harbours, then walk down to the Viaduct Harbour waterfront for coffee at a quayside cafe — this is Auckland at its most compact and navigable.
Auckland War Memorial Museum
Head to the Domain to visit the museum — attend the 11am Maori cultural performance, then take an hour for the natural history galleries covering New Zealand's extraordinary geological story.
Ponsonby Road evening walk
Auckland's most characterful strip is best explored on foot at early evening when the independent restaurants open. Browse the stretch between Franklin Road and Karangahape Road for a feel of how locals actually live.
Culprit Dining Room, CBD
Modern New Zealand cuisine on a rotating set menu — let the kitchen decide and you will almost certainly eat better than if you ordered a la carte. Book ahead.
Day 2
Rangitoto Island summit hike
Take the 9am ferry from the downtown terminal (NZ$36 return) and hike to the summit through black lava fields and pohutukawa forest. The return hike takes about two hours — be back at the wharf by 1pm to catch an afternoon ferry.
Devonport village stroll
Combine the Rangitoto return with a stop at Devonport on the North Shore — a five-minute ferry hop from the CBD. Walk up North Head volcanic reserve for a different angle on the harbour and city.
Wynyard Quarter evening
Auckland's redeveloped waterfront precinct has excellent seafood stalls and bars with views over the marina — arrive around 5pm when it is animated but not overcrowded.
MASU by Nic Watt, CBD
Contemporary Japanese robata grill using premium New Zealand seafood — the sashimi platters are outstanding and the robata-grilled meats pair well with the sake list.
Day 3
Waiheke Island full day
Take the 9am ferry (40 minutes, NZ$36 return) and buy the island day bus pass for NZ$10. Start at Oneroa beach for a morning swim, then work up to the vineyards by midday.
Mudbrick Vineyard tasting
Mudbrick sits above Church Bay with direct views of the Auckland skyline — their bistro terrace is the place to linger over a glass of their estate red with a cheese board before the afternoon ferries fill up.
Sunset return ferry
Book the 6pm or 7pm return ferry deliberately — the crossing back across the Hauraki Gulf as the city lights come on is one of Auckland's genuinely great free experiences.
The Oyster Inn, Waiheke Island
Right in Oneroa village, this relaxed seafood spot serves freshly shucked local oysters and coconut ceviche — perfect for a long lunch on the island before catching the return ferry.
Travel tips
- →Take the Waiheke ferry for a half-day of beaches and wineries
- →Use an AT HOP card for buses, trains and ferries
- →Build in buffer days — Auckland weather is changeable and flights inland can delay
