Book Naadam Festival tickets (July 11-13) well in advance — the main stadium events fill fast, but the real magic is the children's horse racing 40 km outside the city at Khui Doloon Khudag. Hire a taxi and join the crowds on the steppe for a scene unchanged for centuries.
Arrive at Gandantegchinlen Monastery at 9-10am on a weekday to watch monks chant in the main hall — tourists are welcome but keep quiet. The 26-metre golden Janraisig statue inside is breathtaking, and weekday mornings are far quieter than weekends.
The National Museum of Mongolia on Juulchny Gudamj holds remarkable Hunnu-era artefacts and traditional deel costumes. Skip the ground floor and head straight to floors 3-4 for the nomadic lifestyle displays — allow at least two hours.
Try khorkhog (lamb slow-cooked with hot stones) at a local ger camp on the outskirts rather than in tourist restaurants — ask your guesthouse to arrange it. The best versions are cooked by the family who lives there, and eating it means also getting the hot stones pressed against your hands, said to bring good health.

Day 1
Sukhbaatar Square & Government Palace
Start your morning at the vast central square dominated by Chinggis Khaan's statue on horseback. The palace colonnades and surrounding Soviet-era buildings give a strong sense of the city's layered history — arrive by 9am before tour groups descend.
Gandantegchinlen Monastery
A 10-minute taxi from the square brings you to Mongolia's most important Buddhist monastery. Watch monks chanting in the main temple, then climb the steps to see the towering gold-plated Janraisig statue. Budget 90 minutes.
Narantuul Market (Black Market)
The sprawling outdoor market where locals buy everything from cashmere deel to motorbike parts. Arrive by 2pm for full activity — keep valuables secure, use a money belt, and haggle on cashmere goods (quality is excellent at a fraction of western prices).
Veranda Restaurant
Long-established favourite in central UB with a menu spanning Mongolian beef dishes and Mediterranean options — the Mon Beef Steak is the standout, and the indoor terrace atmosphere is a genuine step up from the norm.
Day 2
National Museum of Mongolia
Dedicated floors cover nomadic culture, Hunnu-era archaeology, and traditional dress with some genuinely world-class exhibits. Go straight to floors 3 and 4 for the nomadic lifestyle section — allow 2 hours and arrive at opening time (10am) to beat school groups.
Zaisan Memorial
Climb the 300+ steps to this Soviet-era hilltop war memorial for the best panoramic view of the city framed by steppe and mountains on all sides. The circular mosaic frieze celebrating Mongolian-Soviet friendship is fascinating, and sunset views are spectacular.
Terelj Day Trip
Arrange an afternoon taxi to Turtle Rock in Terelj National Park (80 km). The granite formations and open steppe feel genuinely remote — a shared taxi from Dragon Centre costs around 40,000-60,000 MNT each way, far cheaper than a tour.
Hazara Indian Restaurant
Hidden behind the Wrestling Palace, this long-standing UB institution serves excellent North Indian food to a loyal local crowd — rich curries and fresh naan at prices well below what the city-centre tourist restaurants charge.
