Sydney pairs an instantly recognisable harbour — Opera House, bridge, ferries — with a string of world-class ocean beaches and a relaxed café and dining culture. Spend time in Bondi, the Inner West, and the Blue Mountains as well as the postcard CBD waterfront.

Don't miss
Swim at Mahon Pool in Maroubra at high tide — a free ocean rock pool carved into a headland that fills with open ocean swells, far less crowded than Bondi's Icebergs, and one of Sydney's best-kept morning secrets.
Take the Manly Ferry (a regular transport ferry, not a tourist boat — just tap your Opal card) from Circular Quay at dusk for the best and cheapest view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the city lights come on — costs about A$9 each way.
Eat pho and banh mi on Cabramatta's John Street — Sydney's best Vietnamese precinct is a 45-minute train ride from the city but feels like a different country, and lunch for two costs under A$25 total.
Walk the Royal National Park's Coast Track (26km, 2 days) south of Sydney — Australia's oldest national park has cliff-top trails, secluded beaches, and overnight camping at North Era Beach that book out weeks ahead on the NSW National Parks app.
Weekend itinerary · 3 days
Day 1
Sydney Opera House & Harbour walk
Start at the Opera House at 8am — the exterior is free to walk around and the morning light from the Bennelong Point tip across to the Bridge is the best in the city. Book a guided front-of-house tour (A$45) to see the interiors if you're curious.
The Rocks heritage walk
Walk five minutes west to The Rocks, Sydney's oldest neighbourhood — the Saturday/Sunday markets are worth browsing, and the narrow laneways behind George Street (Suez Canal Lane, Nurses Walk) show the original colonial streetscape.
Bondi to Coogee coastal walk
Grab a bus or Uber to Bondi Beach and walk the 6km Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk south — it passes four beaches, two ocean pools (including Bronte and Mahon), and coastal cliff scenery that rivals anything on the continent. Takes about 2 hours at a relaxed pace.
Icebergs Dining Room, Bondi
Perched above the Icebergs ocean pool with direct views of Bondi Beach — the lunch menu is more affordable than dinner and the pasta is consistently excellent. Book a week ahead for a window table.
Day 2
Manly Beach and Shelly Beach
Take the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay (35 minutes, A$9) and walk to Manly Beach's less-visited southern end to reach Shelly Beach — a small, calm, protected cove perfect for snorkelling with wobbegong sharks (harmless) and blue gropers.
Spit to Manly Harbour Walk
The 10km Spit to Manly walk through Sydney Harbour National Park is one of the great urban walking tracks — native bush, secluded harbour beaches, and Aboriginal rock engravings most tourists never find. Start at The Spit Bridge (bus from the CBD).
Taronga Zoo at dusk
The zoo's hilltop position gives the single best view of the Sydney Harbour skyline — buy a Zoopass that includes the ferry (A$55) and aim for the late afternoon when animals are more active and the light on the Harbour turns golden.
Pasteur Vietnamese, Circular Quay
Best value meal near the harbour precinct — a family-run Vietnamese restaurant on Clarence Street doing exceptional pho and crispy skin chicken rice at lunch prices that feel frozen in 2015.
Day 3
Surry Hills coffee and market
The Crown Street corridor in Surry Hills is Sydney's best food and coffee neighbourhood — the Saturday Surry Hills Market on Shannon Reserve (first Saturday of the month) is a good reason to time your trip, and Artificer roastery nearby does benchmark specialty coffee.
Carriageworks Farmers Market
Every Saturday morning at Carriageworks arts centre in Eveleigh (10 min walk from Surry Hills), one of Australia's best farmers markets gathers producers from across NSW — the cheese, charcuterie, and sourdough stalls are reason enough to get up early.
White Rabbit Gallery
A free private gallery in Chippendale dedicated entirely to contemporary Chinese art — four floors of installations, video works, and sculptures that are consistently among the most interesting art you'll see in Sydney, and entirely free to enter.
LP's Quality Meats, Chippendale
A brilliant Sunday afternoon spot — American-style smoked meats (brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends) done to a standard that matches Texas, with a strong natural wine list and a relaxed back patio.
